Friday 18th August - Day 5

Well I suppose we had been lucky with weather so far…..it had to come to an end!!! Quite heavy and persistent rain halted digging work this morning. Our dedicated volunteers weren’t put off by the rain, they saw this as a chance to clean all of the artefacts found so far.

Everyones hard work was repayed after lunch when the rain stopped and the sun broke through. This left us a couple of hours to continue cleaning and artefact retrieval in Trench 9 ( the cobbled driveway?)

Trench 10 was also given some attention by Peter and Dominic the fiery haired Irishman. Cleaning in this trench revealed a large linear ditch, I am sure Dominic was happy to get stuck in to this juicy medieval feature. We await the mountains of finds (?) !!!

I would like to say a special thank you and well done to 9 year old Joel, who has worked very hard at home to produce a beautiful poem and a telling description of his experience of archaeology so far. These two pieces are included in the day 5 diary and I am sure you would agree that Joel is a very creative and thoughtful writer. An archaeologist for the future. It also pleases me to see that this project is inspiring the young people of the area.

Thanks to everyone who came today you have proved that you are not just fair weather archaeologists.
