Trench 8. Isn’t it pretty!! We also managed to get the area photographed. We finished that 5 minutes before the thunder storm!!! This meant that we can all get drawing tomorrow.
We had a good group of volunteers again which allowed us to continue the cleaning in trench 9 and make a start on trenches 10, 11.

Trench 9- This trench was the focus of our webcam today This large area of cobbled surface could be main driveway up to the hall- Watch this space!!!! A couple of finds trays were filled with goodies from this trench, lots of animal bones, glass and a wide range of post medieval pottery. A bottle seal bearing the Frecheville coat of arms was found by Paul, it is our find of the day and it is described by Paul himself in the Day 4 diary. Well done to him!!!

Trench 10 and trench 11- These trenches underwent a stiff cleaning today by Dave, Eileen, Eileen 2(the revenge of Eileen), Dominic and Pat. These trenches were positioned to find the alignment of two features identified during last years excavation. Firstly to find the south most wall of the original 1604 hall and secondly to find an earlier large ditch feature. The ditch is medieval in date and probably associated with a much earlier medieval building. Todays’ news is that initial cleaning has revealed features a couple of linear features that could well be the ones we were looking for. Well done to Dominic for finding our first medieval green glaze pottery of this season, I am sure these features will yield more juicy medieval finds, but as always we will have to wait and see.
