The Pits

In 1896 nine coal mines, employing 3529 underground and 599 surface workers, were recorded in the Staveley area. These included Balborough No. 1 and 2, Hartington No. 1 and 2, Ireland, Markham No. 1 and 2, St. John's, and Seymour, the majority of which were owned by the Staveley Coal and Iron Co.
