Heart of Staveley 2010-

From June through August 2010, a team of professional archaeologists worked with the Staveley History Society and 185 volunteers from local communities to complete a programme of archaeological survey and excavation on the grounds of Staveley Hall. A total of seven trenches (T13-19) were opened to investigate the open grassland north of the Hall (T13), to expand on the previous investigations by ARCUS in 2005-6 (T14-15), and to investigate aspects of the former gardens to the west of the hall (T16-19).

In addition to the excavation programme, Staveley Hall and grounds were surveyed via Laser Scanning and EDM to provide the data to create a 3D reconstruction of 17th century Staveley Hall and gardens. An interactive reconstruction of the Hall and grounds based on the archaeology, historic documents, and the laser scan data is now available on this site.

From September until December, the post-excavation phase of the project offered workshops from finds processing and analysis, finds illustration, processing and identifying animal remains, post-medieval ceramics from north-Derbyshire and Yorkshire,  field-walking, landscape analysis, historic maps and aerial photography, geophysical survey, photography and recording historic buildings.
