Heart of Staveley : Secret Garden Dig
From June until October 2010, a team of professional archaeologists will be working with Staveley History Society to complete a programme of archaeological survey and excavation on the grounds of Staveley Hall. Following on from the previous investigations in 2005-6 by ARCUS, from June-August we will be extending two of the previous trenches and expanding the archaeological investigations to include the former garden areas to the west of the Hall. If you happen to be browsing this site whilst we are excavating, weather permitting you will be able to view our live webcam below! In order to view make sure you click to install the Axis ActiveX control where prompted at the top of this page.
In addition to the excavation programme, Staveley Hall and grounds will be surveyed via Laser Scanning and EDM to provide the data for producing an interactive 3D reconstruction of 17th century Staveley Hall and gardens.
In September and October, the post-excavation phase of the project will offer four one-day Sunday workshops from finds processing and analysis, finds illustration, processing and identifying animal remains, post-medieval ceramics from north-Derbyshire and Yorkshire, field-walking, landscape analysis, historic maps and aerial photography, geophysical survey, photography and recording historic buildings.
Participation in the excavation, post-excavation and workshop programme is free and open to all! Click here to find out how you can get involved
