Dig Diary - Monday 21st August - Day 7 |
||
Weather forecast wasn’t good for today but the sun came out and the rain stayed away, well at least until almost the end of the day.
I started in Trench 10 this morning with Dominic at one end and Dave was in a hole at the other end. Dominic and I spent all morning mattocking, shovelling and bucketing. Unfortunately we didn’t find anything of great significance. We removed a clay feature which was thought to cover a pipe but didn’t. Dave’s hole had become about a metre deep and it could be part of a cellar as mortar was found on the sides and base. After lunch I went to trench 11 with Linda.
Arrived bright and early at our usual time of 8.40am!! Even had time to go round the shops before they opened. Have been in Trench 11 all day. Had a new recruit today – Joel’s Dad (Joel of poetry fame), who has been inspired by Joel’s enthusiasm and decided to come and try his hand. He found lots of animal bones, possibly cow. A very important find was found in this trench on Saturday, a piece of 1,000 year old made using fragments of shell, so we spent the rest of the day trying to find some more of it – unsuccessful though. Joel’s 13 year old brother Pete also came along to have a go at digging. He also found some animal bones. In the afternoon we identified a V shaped ditch and spent the rest of the afternoon digging it out. Hoped to get it finished but the weather beat us, so we came to do this diary.
A new trench has been opened at the side of the Church and Katherine and some of the children have made a start on this. Two small balls were found, very light in weight, not sure what these are, maybe some sort of gaming pieces.
