Dig Diary - Day Four
It appeared that we didn’t have many people on site today, however half the diggers were deep in the bowels of the earth in trenches 10 and 11 by the Church wall, looking for traces of the ditch.
Luckily for us John and Cynthia Sedgwick have returned from holiday and Cynthia was able to provide us with fruit cake and date and walnut cake to keep us going.
There have been two interesting finds today. Firstly a copper hair pin and secondly a glass seal from a bottle with what appears to show the Frecheville Arms. Above the shield is a coronet which would suggest it is the arms of Lord John Frecheville and we can date the seal from when he was granted his peerage in the 1660’s to the sale of Staveley Hall in the 1680’s. Both items were found in Trench 9 at the side of the causeway.
Unfortunately everyone had to down tools at about 3.00pm due to a slight shower!!! (thunderstorm). As a result of this I have drawn the short straw to write today’s diary. All being well, Rachel will be back tomorrow with a more detailed account.
