Dig Diary - Thursday 31th August - Day 16

We turned up today not expecting to dig due to the forecast rain which hasn’t materialised.  We enjoyed yesterday so much that we came back for more.

We have been digging the cobbled area in Trench 9, the main job has been removing shale and iron slag that made up the top of the pathway.  We have uncovered a layer of sandstone paving.  Finds have been small fragments of glass and bones.  Not very much more other than a small bit of pot.  However the find of the day has been a clay pipe bowl in the shape of a soldiers head.  As we speak two large animal bones are coming to light wedged under the main paving.

We are a lot dirtier than we were yesterday but at least we are dry and not complaining just looking forward to the Radox bath!
