Dig Diary - Monday 28th August - Day 13

Today was my first visit to the site in a week. And it was a 'visit' of the flying variety. For the first time I signed the visitor's book instead of my (pink) time sheet, and it just felt unnatural to enter the site office whilst being clean. I had a chat and catch up (and bun) with Cynthia and Allan, had a nosey at the finds and headed for the trenches.  I couldn't believe how much things have changed and how much work had been done in a week! We now had an extra trench, and to my surprise the site was crawling with volunteers, despite it being a bank holiday, bless their rather grubby smelly cotton socks!

I have been told about various finds, and was told of the exceptionally kind man who came down with a metal detector and pulled finds off the spoil heaps; including musket balls - the ones that got away, There was quite a box full and I must admit I found it hard to believe they were all from our spoil heap - until I saw him in action the next day!

As for the trenches - I don't know what to say really, I couldn’t make head nor tale out of them yesterday and I still can't today. I just can’t believe I have missed so much, I’m far too nosey for my own good, I like to know what's going on all the time!

Just as I was about to leave Steve found a small silver coin, so naturally not wanting to miss out on the action I went with him whilst he cleaned it. It's a very pretty little piece, hammered and quite crudely clipped around the edges, now the metal detecting guy did tell me he thought it might be an Edward the IV, (I THINK he said that, my memory is terrible so it really could be anything ). Never the less it gave me that thirst to get out and get digging. I had been away over a week now - I just couldn't wait to get stuck in!!

 Till tomorrow .......  Rachael
